Alexander von Zemlinsky, geboren in 1871 in de Weense Leopoldstadt, was een Oostenrijkse componist en dirigent wiens muziek een brug slaat tussen de laatromantiek en de nieuwe muziek. Zijn werk, dat sterk beïnvloed is door Brahms, Wagner, Mahler en Schönberg, omvat een rijke collectie van operatisch werk, waaronder "Der Traumgörge" en "Eine florentinische Tragödie". Zemlinsky, die ook een invloedrijke docent was, telde onder zijn leerlingen namen als Alban Berg en Erich Korngold.
