York Bowen, geboren in 1884 in Londen, was een veelzijdig Brits componist en pianist die een indrukwekkende carrière van meer dan vijftig jaar kende. Als jong talent won hij al op jonge leeftijd een stipendium aan de Royal Academy of Music, waar hij zijn muzikale vaardigheden verder ontwikkelde. Bowen was niet alleen een getalenteerd pianist, maar ook een bekwaam dirigent, organist, violist en hoornist. Zijn composities, die vaak worden gekenmerkt door een rijke harmonische taal en een romantische stijl, omvatten meer dan 160 werken, waaronder kamermuziek, pianosonates en vioolsonates.
