Mieczysław Weinberg, geboren in Warschau, was een getalenteerde componist en pianist wiens leven en werk diepgaand beïnvloed werden door de tumultueuze tijden waarin hij leefde. Weinberg groeide op in een familie die actief was in het Jiddische theater, wat zijn vroege jaren doorweekte met muziek. Op jonge leeftijd leerde hij zichzelf piano spelen en ontwikkelde zich tot een vaardig musicus, die zelfs zijn vader kon vervangen als dirigent in het Joodse Theater van Warschau. Weinberg's composities reflecteren de oorlog, onderdrukking en menselijk lijden die hij persoonlijk meemaakte. Na de Duitse invasie in 1939 vluchtte hij naar de Sovjet-Unie, waar hij uiteindelijk een belangrijke rol speelde in de klassieke muziekwereld.
