Karl Weigl was een getalenteerde Oostenrijkse componist en pianist, geboren in 1881 in Wenen. Hij groeide op in een kunstzinnige, joodse familie en toonde al op jonge leeftijd zijn muzikale talent. Weigl kreeg privéles van de beroemde Alexander von Zemlinsky, een vriend van het gezin, en studeerde later aan het Weense Conservatorium. Zijn muziek werd beïnvloed door grootheden als Brahms en Mahler, en hij schreef zes symfonieën, verschillende concerten, kamermuziek, liederen en een opera.

In 1938, na de Anschluss, werd Weigl gedwongen te vluchten voor de nazi-terreur en emigreerde hij naar de Verenigde Staten, waar hij in 1943 de Amerikaanse nationaliteit aanvaardde. In Amerika zette hij zijn carrière voort als componist en muziekpedagoog, en hij trouwde met de pianiste en componiste Vally Weigl. Weigl's werk is een voortzetting van de grote Oostenrijkse-Duitse symfonische traditie en blijft tot op de dag van vandaag bewonderd door muziek liefhebbers over de hele wereld.
