Giovanni Battista Viotti (1755-1824) was een Italiaanse violist en componist wiens virtuositeit hem wereldberoemd maakte. Geboren in Fontanetto da Po, begon Viotti al op jonge leeftijd met het spelen van de viool en ontwikkelde zich tot een van de meest invloedrijke violinisten van zijn tijd. Zijn composities, die vaak een prominente vioolpartij en een aantrekkelijke liederlijke melodieuze kracht vertoonden, hebben een blijvende invloed gehad op de klassieke muziek. Viotti was niet alleen een briljante muzikant, maar ook een directeur van opera-gezelschappen in Parijs en Londen.
