Louis Vierne was een Franse organist en componist van wereldfaam, geboren in 1870 in Poitiers. Ondanks zijn bijna volledige blindheid vanaf geboorte, overleefde hij verschillende persoonlijke tragedies en ontwikkelde zich tot een van de meest invloedrijke organisten van zijn tijd. Vierne studeerde aan het Conservatoire de Paris onder de beroemde orgelmeesters César Franck en Charles-Marie Widor. Hij werd bekend om zijn virtuoze improvisaties en zijn uitgebreide oeuvre voor orgel, waaronder zes orgelsymfonieën en een Messe solennelle. Als organist van de kathedraal Notre-Dame de Paris van 1900 tot zijn dood in 1937, versterkte Vierne de Franse orgeltraditie en inspireerde generaties organisten.
