"Tchaikovsky by Arrangement" van John Mauceri is een opmerkelijke opera-adaptatie van het klassieke verhaal "De Notenkraker en de Muizenkoning, of het verhaal van de klokkenmaker" van Pjotr Iljitsj Tsjaikovski. Uitgebracht op 1 januari 2020 door Toccata Classics, biedt dit album een unieke en meeslepende interpretatie van het bekende verhaal, geïnspireerd door Tchaikovski's Op. 71, TH 14.
Met een speeltijd van ongeveer 1 uur en 15 minuten, neemt Mauceri je mee op een reis door de tijd, van 1416 tot heden. Het album is verdeeld in drie delen, elk met een reeks nummers die de verhaalontwikkeling en de muzikale evolutie weerspiegelen. De opname, uitgevoerd door het Royal Scottish National Orchestra onder leiding van Mauceri, wordt versterkt door de stem van Alan Cumming, die de verteller speelt.
Deel 1 speelt zich af in 1416 en volgt het verhaal van prinses Pirlipat en de vloek die op haar rust. Deel 2 springt naar 1816 en introduceert de bekende personages van de Notenkraker en de Muizenkoning, met een reeks spannende en magische momenten. Deel 3 sluit het verhaal af, springend naar 1834 en heden, en brengt de losse eindjes bijeen.
