Johan Severin Svendsen, geboren in 1840 in Christiania (nu Oslo) en overleden in 1911 in Kopenhagen, was een vooraanstaande Noorse componist, dirigent en violist. Zijn muziek, vooral zijn orkestwerken, wordt wereldwijd gewaardeerd voor hun diepgang en meeslepende kracht. Svendsen was een pionier in de Noorse muziekwereld en zijn invloed is nog steeds merkbaar in de klassieke muziek van vandaag.
