Over George London

George London, geboren als George Burnstein in 1920, was een Canadees-Amerikaanse bas-bariton die een indrukwekkende carrière in de operawereld bouwde. Geboren uit een Joods-Litouws gezin, groeide hij uit tot een van de meest gerespecteerde zangers van zijn tijd. Zijn stem en uitvoering in rollen als Don Giovanni, Boris Godunov, Wotan, Scarpia en Amfortas worden nog steeds herdacht en bewonderd. London was de eerste Amerikaan die de titelrol in Boris Godunov zong op de beroemde Bayreuth Festspiele. Naast zijn succesvolle carrière op het podium, richtte hij de George London Foundation for Singers op, een organisatie die jonge operazangers ondersteunt en hun talenten ontwikkelt. Zijn carrière werd helaas vroegtijdig beëindigd door gezondheidsproblemen, maar zijn nalatenschap leeft voort in de vele jonge zangers die hij heeft geïnspireerd en ondersteund.
