Sheng, B.: Song of Majnun is een indrukwekkende avant-garde opera die op 1 januari 1997 werd uitgebracht onder het label Delos. Deze unieke compositie van Bright Sheng, in combinatie met het libretto van Andrew Porter, vertelt een verhaal van liefde, verlies en passie.
Het album bestaat uit acht scènes, waarin de verschillende personages hun verhaal vertellen. Van de openings-scène "Tiger in the pinewood" tot de slot-scène "Layla, we mourn you", wordt de luisteraar meegenomen op een emotionele reis door de wereld van Majnun en Layla. De compositie is een meesterwerk van moderne muziek, met een unieke combinatie van traditionele en experimentele elementen.
Naast de muzikale uitvoering bevat het album ook een interessant gesprek tussen componist Bright Sheng, librettist Andrew Porter en Tom Sudholt, de host van Saturday Afternoon at the Opera. Dit gesprek biedt een dieper inzicht in de creatie van het werk en de inspiratie achter de compositie.
