Erwin Schulhoff, geboren op 8 juni 1894 in Praag, was een buitengewoon getalenteerde Tsjechische componist en pianist. Met een briljante techniek en een diepgaande expressie trok hij al snel de aandacht in de muziekwereld. Schulhoffs carrière bloeide, maar werd tragisch afgebroken door de opkomst van het naziregime. Als Dadaïst, communist en Jood voldoe hij aan alle criteria om als een "ontwortelde kunstenaar" te worden vervolgd. Ondanks zijn populaire status in zijn tijd, eindigde zijn leven in het concentratiekamp Wülzburg, waar hij op 18 augustus 1942 overleed. Schulhoffs werk, dat sterk beïnvloed is door expressionisme, omvat voornamelijk kamermuziek en biedt een diepgaande kijk in zijn artistieke visie en de tumultueuze tijd waarin hij leefde.
