Alexander Melik-Pashayev was een uitstekende Sovjet-dirigent, vooral bekend om zijn werk in de operawereld. Geboren op 10 februari 1905 in Tbilisi, begon hij zijn carrière al vroeg en trad in 1931 toe tot het Bolshoi Theater in Moskou, waar hij tot 1962 bleef werken. Hij was een begenadigd dirigent die talloze opnames van opera's maakte met het Bolshoi Opera, waaronder werken van componisten zoals Tchaikovsky en Borodin. Zijn interpretaties van klassieke opera's zijn nog steeds geliefd bij klassiekemuziekfans over de hele wereld.
