Franz Schmidt, geboren op 22 december 1874 in Pressburg (het huidige Bratislava), was een veelzijdig Oostenrijks kunstenaar die zijn sporen verdiende als componist, cellist en pianist. Schmidt, die ook wel Ferenc Schmidt genoemd werd, groeide op in een familie met Hongaarse wortels en verhuisde op jonge leeftijd naar Wenen, waar hij later een prominente rol zou spelen in de muziekwereld. Als directeur en later rector van het Conservatorium in Wenen van 1925 tot 1937, droeg hij aanzienlijk bij aan de muzikale opleiding van zijn tijd.
