Jakub Šimon Jan Ryba, geboren in 1765 in Přeštice, Tsjechië, was een veelzijdig Tsjechisch componist, muziekpedagoog en dirigent. Ryba, die afkomstig was uit een familie van kantors en organisten, studeerde aan het Piaristengymnasium in Praag en werd onderwezen door bekende componisten als Josef Ferdinand Norbert Seger en Leopold Antonín Kozeluh. Zijn meest beroemde werk, de "Czech Christmas Mass" (Česká mše vánoční "Hej mistře!"), is een integraal onderdeel geworden van de Tsjechische kersttradities dankzij zijn vrolijke sfeer. Ryba componeerde ongeveer 1400 werken, waaronder meer dan dertig missen, en was een van de eerste componisten die liedjes op Tsjechische teksten schreef. Zijn muziek, die de overgang van classicisme naar romantiek weerspiegelt, blijft vandaag de dag populair en wordt wereldwijd gewaardeerd.
