Edmund Rubbra's "Nine Tenebrae Motets / Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis" is a profound exploration of sacred choral music, released on Naxos in 2001. This album showcases the depth and versatility of Rubbra's compositional style, featuring a diverse range of works that span his career. The centerpiece of the album is the "Nine Tenebrae Motets," a deeply personal and powerful set of responsories for Maundy Thursday. These motets are divided into three "nocturns," each consisting of three motets, and cover the full spectrum of choral sound, from delicate and intimate to bold and declamatory.
In addition to the Tenebrae Motets, the album includes the "Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis in A-Flat Major, Op. 65," a beautiful and lyrical setting of the traditional texts. The "Missa in honorem Sancti Dominici, Op. 66," also known as the "St. Dominic Mass," is another highlight, showcasing Rubbra's mastery of the Mass form. The album also features the "Missa Cantuariensis, Op. 59," or "Canterbury Mass," as well as several organ works, including the "Prelude & Fugue on a Theme of Cyril Scott, Op. 69" and the "Meditation for Organ, Op. 79."
Performed by the renowned Choir of St. John's College, Cambridge, under the direction of Christopher Robinson, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience. With a total duration of just over an hour, it is an excellent introduction to the choral music of Edmund Rubbra, one of the most important British composers of the 20th century. The album is a testament to Rubbra's unique voice and his enduring contribution to the choral repertoire.
