Gioachino Rossini, geboren in 1792 in de Italiaanse stad Pesaro, is een van de meest invloedrijke componisten uit de vroege Romantiek. Met zijn 39 opera's, waaronder de wereldberoemde komische opera's "Il barbiere di Siviglia" en "L'italiana in Algeri," heeft Rossini nieuwe standaarden gezet voor zowel komische als serieuze opera. Zijn melodieuze en humoristische muziekstijl maakte hem al op jonge leeftijd beroemd. Rossini's carrière was kort maar intens: in slechts twintig jaar schreef hij zijn meest bekende werken, voordat hij op 37-jarige leeftijd met pensioen ging.
