Max Reger (1873-1916) was een Duitse componist, pianist, organist, dirigent en docent van wie het werk een unieke mix vormt van de contrapuntische diepte van Bach en de harmonieën van Schönberg. Geboren in Brand (Opper-Palts) en opgegroeid in Meiningen, groeide Reger uit tot een virtuoos musicus en een veelzijdig componist die zowel traditionele vormen als innovatieve idioom ontwikkelde. Zijn carrière omvatte posities als concertpianist, muziekdirecteur aan de Universiteitskerk in Leipzig en hofmuzikant van George II, Hertog van Saxe-Meiningen.
