Het album combineert twee opmerkelijke composities: "L'enfant et les sortilèges" en "Shéhérazade". "L'enfant et les sortilèges" is een magisch en poëtisch werk, geschreven in samenwerking met de Franse schrijfster Colette. Deze opera vertelt het verhaal van een ongeduldig kind dat door zijn wreedheid en ongeduld de wereld om zich heen tot leven brengt, alleen om uiteindelijk inzicht te krijgen in zijn eigen gedrag. "Shéhérazade" is een set van drie songs voor sopraan en orkest, geïnspireerd door de verhalen uit "Duizend-en-een-nacht". Deze compositie laat Ravels talent voor melodieuze en kleurrijke muziek zien, met invloeden uit de Oriënt. De teksten, geschreven door de Franse dichter Tristan Klingsor, voegen een laag van poëzie en mysterie toe aan de muziek.
