Richard Wagner, geboren op 22 mei 1813 in Leipzig, is een van de meest invloedrijke componisten uit de westerse muziekgeschiedenis. Als componist, theaterregisseur en dirigent revolutioneerde hij de operawereld met zijn unieke visie op de kunstvorm. Wagner is vooral bekend om zijn epische muziekdrama's, zoals de 16-uur durende opera-cyclus 'Der Ring des Nibelungen'.
