Gabriel Pierné, geboren op 16 augustus 1863 in Metz, was een veelzijdig Frans kunstenaar die bekendstond als componist, dirigent, pianist en organist. Zijn muzikale talent manifesteerde zich al op jonge leeftijd, want op slechts elfjarige leeftijd won hij al prijzen. Pierné studeerde aan het prestigieuze Conservatorium van Parijs, waar hij les kreeg van grootheden als César Franck en Jules Massenet. Als opvolger van Franck werd hij organist van de beroemde Saint Clotilde in Parijs. Zijn oeuvre omvat een breed scala aan genres, met een sterke focus op kamermuziek en neoclassicisme. Pierné schreef ook drie succesvolle balletten tussen 1923 en 1934 en werd in 1924 lid van de Académie des Beaux-Arts. Zijn muziek wordt vaak geprezen om zijn diepgang en de unieke mix van romantische en moderne elementen, waardoor hij vaak wordt beschouwd als een van de meest complete Franse musici van zijn tijd.
