Andrzej Panufnik, geboren in Warschau in 1914, was een van de meest invloedrijke Poolse componisten en dirigenten van de 20e eeuw. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog speelde hij een cruciale rol bij de heroprichting van het Filharmonisch Orkest van Warschau. Zijn muziek, die een unieke combinatie van traditionele Poolse elementen en moderne compositietechnieken omvat, heeft wereldwijd erkenning gekregen. Panufnik's oeuvre omvat een breed scala aan werken, van symfonieën en concerten tot kamermuziek en filmmuziek. Na zijn vlucht uit het communistische Polen in 1954 vestigde hij zich in Engeland, waar hij verder bloeide en in 1991 werd geridderd door Koningin Elizabeth II.
