Leo Ornstein, geboren in Krementsjoek, Rusland, in december 1893 en overleden in Green Bay, Verenigde Staten, in februari 2002, was een Amerikaanse componist en pianist van wereldformaat. Ornstein begon zijn carrière als virtuoos pianist en maakte snel naam in de Verenigde Staten. In 1918 beschreef de New York Times een van zijn optredens, wat zijn status als een van de meest opvallende musici van zijn tijd bevestigde. Ornstein werd gekenmerkt als een futurist en avant-gardist, en zijn muziek werd beschreven als revolutionair en innovatief.
