Vítězslav Novák, geboren als Viktor Augustin Rudolf, was een invloedrijke Tsjechische componist, muziekpedagoog en pianist van het begin van de 20e eeuw. Geboren in Kamenice nad Lipou in 1870, groeide hij op in Jindřichův Hradec en studeerde onder de beroemde Antonín Dvořák. Novák's muziek is diepgaand beïnvloed door impressionisme en Tsjechische volksmuziek, met name de Slovaakse folklore, wat zijn unieke stijl kenmerkt. Als pedagog was hij een legende aan het Praags Conservatorium, waar hij van 1919 tot 1939 lesgaf en een generatie musici vormde.
