Carl August Nielsen, geboren in 1865 op het Deense eiland Funen, is een van de meest prominente en invloedrijke componisten uit de Deense muziekgeschiedenis. Als zoon van arme maar muzikaal talentvolle ouders toonde hij al op jonge leeftijd zijn uitzonderlijke muzikale vaardigheden. Nielsen studeerde aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Kopenhagen en groeide uit tot een veelzijdig kunstenaar, bekend als componist, dirigent en violist. Zijn oeuvre omvat zes symfonieën, waarvan Symfonie No. 4, "Det Uudslukkelige" (Het Onuitroeibare), een van zijn meest dramatische en bekende werken is. Daarnaast componeerde hij opera's, concerten voor verschillende instrumenten, strijkkwartetten en een omvangrijk repertoire van liederen en kantates.
