Jascha Heifetz, geboren in Vilnius als Jossif Robertowitsch Heifetz, wordt wereldwijd beschouwd als een van de grootste violisten aller tijden. Zijn carrière spande zich uit over meer dan zes decennia, waarin hij met zijn technische meesterlijkheid en artistieke gevoeligheid talloze harten veroverde. Als kindprodigie ontdekt, werd Heifetz in Sint-Petersburg opgeleid in de Russische klassieke vioolstijl. Zijn doorbraak kwam met een triomfale debuut in de Carnegie Hall, waar zijn spel zo indrukwekkend was dat collega-violist Fritz Kreisler zich genoodzaakt zag om zijn eigen viool te breken.
