Over William Primrose

William Primrose, geboren in Glasgow in 1904, was een van de meest vooraanstaande altviolisten van de 20e eeuw. Zijn muzikale reis begon al op jonge leeftijd, toen hij op vierjarige leeftijd begon met vioollessen. Na zijn studie aan de Guildhall School of Music in Londen, waar hij onder andere les kreeg van de legendarische Eugène Ysaye, maakte hij de overstap naar de altviool. Primrose was een veelzijdig muzikant die zowel als solist als in ensembles optrad. Hij was lid van het London String Quartet en later van het NBC Symphony Orchestra, waar hij ook het Primrose Quartet vormde. Zijn carrière omspande vele landen en hij was niet alleen een briljante uitvoerder, maar ook een gerenommeerd docent en auteur van boeken over altviooltechniek. Primrose's nalatenschap leeft voort in zijn opnamen en zijn invloed op de klassieke muziekwereld.
