Michael Daugherty's "This Land Sings" is een meeslepende muzikale eerbetoon aan de legendarische Amerikaanse folkzanger en politiek activist Woody Guthrie. Dit album, uitgebracht op 8 mei 2020 via het label Naxos, is een intelligente en diepzinnige hommage aan het leven en de tijd van Guthrie, wiens liedjes de stormachtige jaren van de Grote Depressie vastlegden en zich uitspraken tegen sociale onrechtvaardigheden. Het album bestaat uit een cyclus van zeventien originele vocale en instrumentale stukken, die de essentie van Guthrie's muziek en boodschap vangen.
Met een speelduur van één uur en zes minuten, biedt "This Land Sings" een rijke en veelzijdige ervaring. Het album begint met een ouverture die de bekende melodie van "This Land Is Your Land" citeert, maar het is een oude volksmelodie die ook door de Carter Family werd gebruikt voordat Guthrie er zijn eigen draai aan gaf. De finale van het album fuseert twee traditionele Guthrie-favorieten, "Wayfaring Stranger" en "900 Miles," in een duet dat de zanger voorstelt als een wandelaar die naar de horizon toe gaat, met zijn gitaar op de rug. Het is zowel bluesy als krachtig en vormt een geestdriftige afsluiting.
