Nikolai Medtner, geboren in Moskou in 1880, was een Russische componist en pianist wiens unieke en eigenzinnige compositiestijl hem onderscheidt in de wereld van de klassieke muziek. Als tijdgenoot van Rachmaninoff en Scriabin genoot Medtner een bevoorrechte en welvarende opvoeding, wat zijn muzikale ontwikkeling sterk beïnvloedde.
