Frank Martin, geboren in Zwitserland in 1890, was een van de meest invloedrijke componisten van de twintigste eeuw. Zijn muziek, die zowel neoclassicistische als dodecafonische elementen omvat, is wereldwijd te horen op grote concertpodia, hoewel zijn naam bij een relatief klein publiek bekend is. Martin is vooral bekend om zijn Mis voor dubbelkoor en het oratorium Golgotha, maar zijn oeuvre strekt zich verder uit dan deze meesterwerken. Na jarenlang in Genève te hebben gewoond, bracht hij de laatste 28 jaar van zijn leven door in Naarden, Nederland, waar hij in 1974 overleed. Zijn muziek, gekenmerkt door een diepgaande spiritualiteit en innovatieve stijl, blijft vandaag de dag inspireren en fascineren. Martin's werk, zoals de Mis voor twee vierstemmige koren, wordt beschouwd als een van de meest mooie koorwerken ooit geschreven.
