Henri Marteau (1874-1934) was een beroemd Franse violist en componist die de klassieke muziekwereld in zijn tijd verrijkte met zijn virtuoze vaardigheden en diepgaande muzikale inzichten. Geboren in Reims, begon Marteau zijn muzikale carrière al op jonge leeftijd, geïnspireerd door zijn vader, een amateurviolist, en zijn moeder, een getalenteerde pianist. Zijn internationale renommee groeide snel, en hij trad op op de grootste podiums ter wereld.

Naast zijn succesvolle carrière als solist, was Marteau ook een begenadigd docent. Hij gaf les in prestigieuze steden zoals Genève en Berlijn, en zijn talentvolle studenten kwamen vaak bij hem thuis om les te krijgen. In Berlijn leidde hij van 1908 tot 1914 het Marteau-kwartet, waar hij samenwerkte met andere uitstekende musici.

Marteau's invloed reikt nog steeds door in de muziekwereld, zoals blijkt uit de Internationale Vioolwedstrijd Henri Marteau, die elke drie jaar wordt gehouden in zijn voormalige woonhuis in Lichtenberg, Beieren.
