Gustav Mahler, geboren op 7 juli 1860 in Kalište, Bohemen, was een invloedrijke Oostenrijkse componist en dirigent van de late 19e en vroege 20e eeuw. Zijn diepgaande symfonieën en liederen vormen een brug tussen de romantiek en de moderne muziek van de twintigste eeuw. Als componist fungeerde Mahler als een brug tussen de 19e-eeuwse Austro-Duitse traditie en de moderniteit van het begin van de 20e eeuw.
