Gustav Mahler, geboren op 7 juli 1860 in Kalište, Bohemen, was een invloedrijke Oostenrijkse componist en dirigent van de late 19e en vroege 20e eeuw. Als componist fungeerde Mahler als een brug tussen de 19e-eeuwse Austro-Duitse traditie en de moderniteit van het begin van de 20e eeuw.
