Giacomo Puccini, geboren op 22 december 1858 in Lucca, is een van de meest geliefde en invloedrijke Italiaanse operacomponisten uit de late romantiek. Na de grote Giuseppe Verdi, wordt Puccini vaak beschouwd als de laatste grote meester van de Italiaanse opera. Zijn muziek, die aanvankelijk diep geworteld was in de romantische traditie, ontwikkelde zich later tot een realistisch verismo-stijl, waar hij een van de leidende figuren van werd. Puccini's meest beroemde werken, zoals "La bohème," "Madama Butterfly," en "Turandot," zijn wereldwijd geliefd en worden nog steeds vaak opgevoerd.
