Carl Loewe, geboren als Johann Carl Gottfried Loewe, was een veelzijdig Duits kunstenaar die zijn sporen verdiende als componist, tenor en dirigent. Geboren in 1796 in Löbejün, Saksen, en overleden in 1869 in Kiel, staat Loewe bekend om zijn indrukwekkende repertoire van meer dan 400 balladen en liederen. Tijdens zijn leven werd hij vaak vergeleken met Franz Schubert en genoot hij de bewondering van Hugo Wolf. Zijn dramatische balladen, zoals "Edward" en "Tom der Reimer," zijn tot op de dag van vandaag bewonderd voor hun diepgang en emotionele kracht.
