Aldo Ciccolini, geboren in Napels in 1925, was een Italiaans-Frans pianist die een blijvende indruk achterliet in de wereld van de klassieke muziek. Op slechts 16-jarige leeftijd maakte hij zijn officiële debuut in het Teatro San Carlo, wat het begin van een illustere carrière markeerde. In 1949 won hij de prestigieuze Marguérite Long - Jacques Thibaud prijs in Frankrijk, waar hij uiteindelijk in 1971 de Franse nationaliteit aannam. Ciccolini was vooral bekend om zijn meeslepende interpretaties van Franse componisten zoals Ravel, Debussy en Satie, evenals zijn virtuoze uitvoeringen van Liszt. Hij gaf les aan het Conservatoire de Paris en liet een omvangrijk discografie achter met meer dan honderd opnames.
