Friedrich Kuhlau was een invloedrijke Duitse-Deense componist en pianist die actief was tijdens de late Klassieke en vroege Romantische perioden. Geboren in Hannover, vestigde hij zich als student in Denemarken, waar hij de rest van zijn leven bleef en een belangrijke rol speelde in de Deense Gouden Eeuw. Kuhlau staat bekend om zijn pianomuziek en is vooral beroemd om zijn werk "Elverhøj", dat in 1828 werd gecomponeerd en als het eerste echte werk van Deens Nationaal-Romantisme wordt beschouwd. Hij was een tijdgenoot en kennismakende van Beethoven en wordt herinnerd als een van de meest belangrijke Deense componisten van zijn tijd.
