Erich Wolfgang Korngold, geboren in 1897 in Brno, was een getalenteerd Oostenrijks componist en dirigent die later de Amerikaanse nationaliteit aannam. Als wonderkind toonde hij al op jonge leeftijd zijn uitzonderlijke muzikale talent, wat hem al snel tot een van de meest invloedrijke componisten in de Hollywoodgeschiedenis maakte. Na zijn vlucht uit Europa in de jaren 1930, vestigde Korngold zich in Hollywood, waar hij de eerste componist van internationale allure werd die muziek schreef voor films.
