Mieczysław Karłowicz was een Poolse componist en dirigent wiens leven en werk door een tragische dood op jonge leeftijd werden gekenmerkt. Geboren in 1876, toonde hij al vroeg een grote liefde voor muziek en natuur. Ondanks zijn zwakke gezondheid was hij een fervent wintersportliefhebber en vond hij inspiratie in de prachtige Tatra-gebergte. Karłowicz' oeuvre omvat zes symfonische gedichten die een brug slaan tussen de stijl van Franz Liszt en Richard Strauss. Zijn werken, zoals de Serenade voor Strijkorkest en de Herrijzenissymfonie, tonen zijn unieke talent en emotionele diepgang.
