Vasily Kalinnikov was een Russisch componist wiens muziek de essentie van de Russische volksmuziek vangt. Geboren in 1866 in de buurt van Oryol, schreef Kalinnikov twee symfonieën, diverse orkestwerken en tal van liederen die bekend staan om hun uitdrukkingsvolle melodieën en rijke orkestratie. Zijn stijl werd beïnvloed door grote namen als Tchaikovsky en Rimsky-Korsakov, en zijn Eerste Symfonie was in het begin van de 20e eeuw zeer populair.
