Jehan Alain was een getalenteerde Franse organist, componist en soldaat, geboren in 1911 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Geboren in een muzikale familie, kreeg Alain zijn eerste lessen op het orgel van zijn vader, Albert Alain, en later van andere bekende docenten zoals Augustin Pierson. Op jonge leeftijd begon Alain te componeren en ontwikkelde een unieke stijl, geïnspireerd door de muziek van Claude Debussy en de filosofie en dans van het Verre Oosten.

Alain's composities, vooral zijn orgelwerken, worden wereldwijd gewaardeerd en zijn een vast onderdeel van het repertoire van de 20e eeuw. Zijn leven werd tragisch afgebroken toen hij in 1940 sneuvelde tijdens de Slag om Saumur, waar hij diende als berijders in de Achtste Gemotoriseerde Pantserdivisie van het Franse leger.
