Johann Adolf Hasse (1699-1783) was een invloedrijke Duitse componist, zanger en muziekleraar van de 18e eeuw, die vooral bekend staat om zijn uitbundige operaproductie. Geboren in Bergedorf, bij Hamburg, begon Hasse zijn carrière als tenor en studeerde later in Italië bij grote meesters zoals Alessandro Scarlatti. Zijn operatische werken, vaak geschreven op libretti van Pietro Metastasio, waren enorm populair en droegen bij aan de ontwikkeling van de opera seria. Hasse was niet alleen een operacomponist, maar schreef ook een aanzienlijke hoeveelheid geestelijke muziek. Zijn muziek spande de brug tussen de late barok en de vroege klassieke periode, en zijn invloed strekte zich uit over verschillende Europese hoven en theaters, waaronder Dresden, Venetië en Napels.
