Howard Hanson was een invloedrijke Amerikaanse componist, dirigent en muziekpedagoog van de twintigste eeuw. Geboren in Nebraska en opgeleid aan de University of Nebraska en Juilliard, is Hanson vooral bekend om zijn lyrische en tonale muziek. Als directeur van de Eastman School of Music gedurende veertig jaar, droeg hij aanzienlijk bij aan de promotie van Amerikaanse klassieke muziek en gaf hij talloze jonge muzikanten de kans om hun talenten te ontwikkelen.
