Fritz Kreisler, geboren in Wenen in 1875, was een van de meest beroemde violisten en componisten van zijn tijd. Zijn unieke, zoete toon en expressieve frasering, gekenmerkt door een merkbaar portamento en rubato, maakten hem onmiddellijk herkenbaar. Kreisler studeerde aan de conservatoria van Wenen en Parijs, waar hij onder andere les kreeg van Léo Delibes. Zijn stijl, hoewel beïnvloed door de Franco-Belgische school, stralende de gemütlichheid van het vooroorlogse Wenen uit.

Kreisler is bekend om zijn romantische melodieën en zijn virtuoze vioolwerken, zoals "Liebesfreud" en "Liebesleid". Hij componeerde ook originele cadensen voor concerten van Beethoven, Brahms en Paganini.
