Benjamin Godard (1849-1895) was een Franse componist en violist van Joodse afkomst, geboren in Parijs. Als wonderkind op de viool studeerde hij aan het prestigieuze Conservatoire de Paris, waar hij zijn talent voor compositie verder ontwikkelde. Godard is vooral bekend om zijn opera 'Jocelyn', maar zijn oeuvre omvat ook acht operas, vijf symfonieën, concertos voor piano en viool, strijkkwartetten, sonates en meer dan honderd liederen. Zijn muziek, die tot de romantische stijl behoort, wordt gekenmerkt door een unieke stem en een helder, persoonlijk stijl. Ondanks zijn korte leven, dat hij op 45-jarige leeftijd door tuberculose beëindigde, heeft Godard een indrukwekkend en veelzijdig repertoire achtergelaten dat nog steeds waard is om te ontdekken.
