Arthur Sullivan, geboren in Londen in 1842, is een van de meest invloedrijke Britse componisten uit de 19e eeuw. Zijn naam is onlosmakelijk verbonden met de operettes die hij samen met de dramaturg W.S. Gilbert schreef, zoals de wereldberoemde "H.M.S. Pinafore," "The Pirates of Penzance" en "The Mikado." Sullivan's oeuvre omvat echter veel meer dan alleen deze bekende werken; hij componeerde 24 opera's, 11 belangrijke orkestwerken, tien koorwerken en oratoria, twee balletten, en tal van kerkmuziek, liederen en kamermuziek.
