Sir Edward German, geboren als German Edward Jones op 17 februari 1862 in Whitchurch, Shropshire, was een invloedrijke Engelse componist van Welshse afkomst. Hij is vooral bekend om zijn uitgebreide oeuvre van incidentele muziek voor het toneel en zijn bijdragen aan de wereld van de operette. German, die in 1928 werd geridderd voor zijn diensten aan de muziek, volgde Sir Arthur Sullivan op als een van de leidende componisten van Engelse operettes. Zijn muziek, vaak levendig en toegankelijk, heeft een blijvende impact gehad op de Britse muziekwereld. German overleed op 11 november 1936 in Londen, maar zijn werk blijft tot op de dag van vandaag geliefd en gewaardeerd.
