Roberto Gerhard, geboren in 1896 in Valls, Catalonië, was een componist van wereldformaat wiens muziek een fascinerende mix vormt van avant-garde en de rijkdom van Spaanse klanken. Zijn muzikale reis begon met pianoles bij de legendarische Enrique Granados en compositiestudies bij Felipe Pedrell. Na Pedrells overlijden in 1922 volgde Gerhard zijn studie voort in Wenen bij Arnold Schoenberg, waar hij de technieken van de twaalftoontechniek onder de knie kreeg. Gerhard's oeuvre omvat opera's, symfonieën, balletten en zelfs elektronische werken, allemaal gekenmerkt door zijn unieke combinatie van moderne tonale en seriële stijlen. Zijn werk is diep geworteld in de Catalaanse folkmuziek en cultuur, wat zijn composities een unieke en herkenbare identiteit geeft.
