Niels Wilhelm Gade, geboren op 22 februari 1817 in Kopenhagen, was een veelzijdig Deens kunstenaar die bekend stond als componist, dirigent, violist, organist en docent. Samen met Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann was hij een van de leidende figuren in de Deense muziekwereld tijdens de zogenaamde Gouden Eeuw. Gade studeerde viool en compositie en vestigde zich als een belangrijke figuur in de Romantische nationale school van de Deense muziek. In 1843 vertrok hij naar Leipzig voor verdere opleiding met een koninklijke beurs. Zijn werk omvat een breed scala aan composities, waaronder stukken voor orgel en klavier. Gade's bijdragen aan de muziekwereld hebben zijn stempel gedrukt op de Deense muziekgeschiedenis en zijn nog steeds van groot belang.
