Niels Wilhelm Gade, geboren op 22 februari 1817 in Kopenhagen, was een vooraanstaande figuur in de Deense muziekwereld van de negentiende eeuw. Als componist, dirigent, violist, organist en docent heeft Gade een blijvende stempel gedrukt op de Deense muziekgeschiedenis. Samen met Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann vormde hij de leidende kracht achter de Deense muziek tijdens de zogenaamde Gouden Eeuw. Gade was de stichter van de romantische nationalistische school in de Deense muziek en zijn werken zijn tot op de dag van vandaag geliefd, zowel in zijn vaderland als daarbuiten. Zijn muzikale talent kwam al vroeg naar voren, want op jonge leeftijd trad hij op als solist. Gade's muziek biedt een rijke en diepgaande ervaring voor iedereen die zich laat meeslepen door de kracht en schoonheid van zijn composities.
