Girolamo Frescobaldi, geboren in 1583 in Ferrara, was een van de meest invloedrijke componisten en virtuoze toetsenisten van de late Renaissance en vroege Barok. Als kindprodigie studeerde hij onder de beroemde Luzzasco Luzzaschi en werd hij beïnvloed door tal van andere componisten. Frescobaldi's carrière bloeide op toen hij werd aangesteld als organist van de Sint-Pietersbasiliek in Rome, een positie die hij gedurende verschillende perioden tot zijn dood in 1643 bekleedde.
